St. John Sonnets were able to lift their game to record a much deserved win against UWI in the BFA Division One tournament last night. The game got off to a late start at Ellerton and the UWI team caught the Sonnets players napping. They were able to score an easy goal as early as 12 minutes in when an advancing Sonnets goalie Bernard Howell was beaten for an easy tap in by Darrio Harewood.

The St. John side, continually inspired by their custodian Howell, got their act together and piled the pressure on the UWI lads. Their mixture of youth and experience ensured they were in command of the mid-field and always looked threatening. At the half UWI were still up 1-0 up but one would not have bet on Sonnets to lose.

In the second half, coming down hill Sonnets came storming at the UWI defense and their anxiety began to show. The UWI communication was falling apart but it would take a corner kick for Sonnets to level the score. Damien Husbands nodded home from near post to give Sonnets a well deserved goal on 63 minutes.

Sonnets were not over yet. If their youngsters’ speed and skill is anything to go by they have a bright future ahead. They showed a great deal of enthusiasm in this match.

In the 87th minute Sonnets were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. A lanky Sheldon White would elude his two markers to score a brilliant header pass a motionless UWI keeper. Final score St. John Sonnets 2-1 UWI. Sonnets remain mid-table after recording a similar win against Benfica in the last round of matches.
